Laparoscopy

The safest access to the abdominal cavity — without large incisions.

Laparoscopy is a modern, minimally invasive surgical technique in which abdominal organs are accessed through small skin incisions (0.5–1 cm) — not through large incisions as in traditional surgery.

Through 3–4 such incisions, specialized micro-instruments (camera, forceps, scissors) are inserted, allowing the surgeon to handle tissue while watching a magnified view on a screen — enabling precise dissection.

Laparoscopy is performed under general anaesthesia. Depending on the complexity of the procedure, you may go home the same day or need to stay in hospital for one or two nights.

What are the advantages of laparoscopy?

Laparoscopy is a well-established and safe way to access the abdominal cavity with clear advantages over laparotomy (open surgery). It provides a better view of the surgical field than open surgery, as the camera can approach all areas closely and magnify the image. This makes the procedure — especially in cases of endometriosis or adhesions — more precise and with less bleeding.

Less pain after the procedure
Smaller scars
Less time in hospital
Faster recovery
Reduced use of painkillers
Lower risk of infections

For these reasons, whenever possible, laparoscopic surgery should be the preferred approach.

What procedures can be performed laparoscopically?

Most gynaecological procedures can today be performed laparoscopically. Some examples are:

Fibroid removal (myomectomy)
Excision of endometriosis lesions
Removal of ovarian cysts
Removal of fallopian tubes (salpingectomy) or repair of tubal pathology
Removal of an ovary (oophorectomy) or adnexa (salpingo-oophorectomy)
Removal of the uterus (hysterectomy)
Repair of uterine, vaginal, bladder or bowel prolapse with or without mesh

The learning curve of laparoscopy is however steep. Complex laparoscopic procedures therefore require years of dedicated training in high-volume laparoscopic centres.

Our gynaecologists have performed hundreds of major laparoscopic procedures at renowned university reference hospitals in Switzerland and Sweden, and have extensive experience and academic expertise in this field. Upon returning to Greece, they decided to perform these procedures together as a team, in order to provide maximum safety and the best possible outcome for their patients.
